September News

This week we have updated the Class Lists on the website and in store.

We have had a busy week with the ladies trying out new techniques.  The Carpenter Star Class proved very popular and it was great to see the fabric combinations. Lillian brought in fabrics she had bought a couple of years ago, and the black background was so different but looked fab.

Suzanne chose traditional fabrics, and was off to quilt it before turning it into a Christmas Cushion.

Yesterday we handed over the Quilts and Hats to Carol at The Tiny Lives Office in Newcastle. She said on behalf of all the staff at The @ Tiny Lives Office and Yve the Sister at the Special Care Baby Unit at the RVI a massive thank you.
We are very excited to announce that we are launching a New campaign to include other hospitals in Gateshead and Durham.
We cannot use the Tiny Lives name and are
asking you to come up with a name for the New campaign which will include Quilts & knitted hats.
We will be working with @ North Star Yarns and the name chosen on the 31st October will receive a prize.
The Quilts are 16" x 20" and can be made from scraps or 2 Fat Quarters. With the launch of the new campaign we are also launching our 'Target Giveaways'. For every 100 quilts we receive all names will be entered into a Free Prize Draw.

Just a quick reminder to everyone that we are open until 7pm every 2nd Thursday of the month.  The dates for the rest of the year are;

Thursday11th October

Thursday 8th November

Thursday13th December

We have also updated our Class Lists and these now include a number of Kids Classes which are being held on the 2nd Thursday of the Month and also in the school holidays.

This Thursday the Class will be making the Union Jack Heart Cushion, which is also available as a Kit for only £7.95.  The Kit includes everything including the Cushion Pad, so you have no excuses to get one made before the Jubilee Weekend.

April News

It is very rare that I leave the shop these days to go and do a workshop, but I could not refuse Jules when she invited me.

The workshop is going to be in 2 stages, the first with me is the piecing part and the second session will be with Pearl Clarkson who will explore hand quilting.

The day started well with the smell of the lunches and the hardest part was not to eat the muffins that were still warm within the first 10 minutes.

We were doing a Strippy quilt, with each of the chisel pieces pre-cut by The Fat Quarters using the Accquilt Studio service that we provide.  This meant everyone was sewing immediately. By mid-afternoon everyone was well on the way to completing each of the rows.

The above picture is one strip from each of the girls, and it was so interesting to see how different each one was.

By the end of the day everyone was well under way to completing their tops ready for Pearl and as you can see they were still smiling.

Whilst I was there I was able to see the quilt that has been on the frame for approximately 4 years.  The group had an original marked quilt by Amy Emms.  The marked top is with the Bowes Museum, but it was copied exactly and is being quilted by the group.  I have only ever seen it rolled on the frame so it was a privilege to see it opened out, prior to rolling on again.

The fabric is a very shiny sateen, and apparantly from the labelling is furnishing fabrics from Bainbridges in Newcastle, Amy Emms loved to work in the shiny sateen.  What is now the top was the original backing purchased by Amy Emms.  The wadding used is wool.  After talking to the girls it is estimated that the quilt should be finished in about a year.  What you have to appreciate is that they are only working for an hour and a half each week. I know I can't wait to see it displayed in all its glory.

The winner of the Free Prize Draw in store was Emma Armstrong from Greenside.  A Moda Charm Pack is on its way, well done.

To keep up to date with the latest events and products in store follow us on Face Book. Log in and 'Like' our Page. Everytime we reach a 100 we will be having a Free Prize Draw.

We now have 50 Tiny Lives Quilts.  Well done but remember this is an ongoing project so please keep them coming in.

March News

'Just Spooling Around'.

Following the huge success of the Buttons & Blooms book and fabrics Terri from Whimsicals has just released her latest book, 'Just Spooling Around'.

There are a couple of quilts included, a runner, cushion and lots more.

We have also taken delivery of Moda's French General 'Rouenneries Deux' Fabrics. Fabulous reds, pinks and biscuit fabrics so typical of the French General Colours. We also have Jelly Rolls, Layer Cakes & Charm Packs in the range.

The latest Issue of Vignette is now with us. Leanne Beasley has once again included some lovely new projects.

We are also pleased to announce that we are now Brother sewing Machine Dealers. The range of machines is extensive. Please contact us if you would like a Demo or need any information on any of the machines in the range.

Now a date for your diary. We will be having an Easter Bonanza starting Wednesday 28th March-Saturday 31st March. Each day there will be demonstrations, Give Aways, a Free Prize Draw and lots more. Remember NO Entry Fee, and Free Cup of tea or coffee. Further details to follow;

Just recently I have had two very good friends who have very sadly lost their grandchildren within a couple of days of their due dates. Both babies were perfect but sadly were dead. The care and support offerred by the staff at the RVI Newcastle was amazing and both famillies said that the time spent with their babies in the Halcyon Suite was so special. This suite is reliant on charitable donations.

At The Fat Quarters we invite you to make a small quilt that can be donated to the 'Tiny Lives' Charity based at the RVI to be distributed. This will be co-ordinated by one of the bereaved famillies and ourselves.

Each doner of a quilt will be entered into a Free Prize Draw. The Draw will take place during the Easter Bonanza event. If you are unable to visit the shop please forward any quilts to us by post.

Remember they are for Tiny babies, and only need to be incubator size.

The quilts should measure 16" x 20", no embellishments, ie: no buttons, no invisible thread and no loose threads.

Many thanks

Quilt Aid Europe 2012

Quilt Aid Europe 2012 has now been launched and we are pleased to announce that we are one of only 6 European Quilt Stores taking part.

12 Australian designers have created blocks for you to make and you then can choose one of the Finishing Kits from any of the stores.

The programme originally started in Australia and then the USA and Europe has now joined in.

The way it works is that you can buy 2 blocks from each of the 6 stores spread across Europe.

Then you can choose which of the Finishing Kits you prefer and order those.  The fabrics in each of the kits are 'Ruby' by Moda.

The blocks that we have are from the designers Janet Rowe and Janelle Wind.

In addition to the Blocks we have designed our own Finishing Kit.

If you would like to see all of the Finished Blocks call into the shop or alternatively follow the Quilt Aid Link.
